Bz Zhang 张迪 is an interdisciplinary artist based on Tongva land (or what we call Los Angeles for now). Across drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations, Bz leverages Western and Chinese-diasporic materials, methods, and archives against each other and themselves, unearthing stories of migration, labor, capital, and empire. Throughout, they work from the vantage point of Chinese diaspora as a collective, pluralistic identity, forging new and renewed solidarities across oceans and borders, to imagine and build shared futures beyond existing systems. 

As a community organizer and licensed architect in California, Bz works with communities across Los Angeles County toward environmental justice through design, construction, and stewardship of public green spaces. They organize with Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and Los Angeles Chinatown Community Land Trust locally and with the Design As Protest Collective and Dark Matter U nationally. 

Their work has been in conversation across wide-ranging sectors: from arts institutions (ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, CalArts, Museum of the African Diaspora, and the Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa), to academic journals and design publications (Log, Domus, Architect Magazine, UCLA’s Critical Planning Journal), to public agencies (US EPA, California DTSC, South Coast AQMD), to cultural arts organizations (1882 Foundation, GYOPO, Asian Arts Initiative), and coalition spaces based in Los Angeles (Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling LA, LA Regional Open Space + Affordable Housing Collaborative). 

Bz holds degrees from University of California, Berkeley and Brown University. They are a 2025-2026 Visiting Critic at Carleton University, 2022 Journal of Architectural Education Fellow, and 2021 USC Citizen Architect Fellow, and they co-authored Challenging Patterns of Supremacy (MAS Context and Dark Matter U, 2025). In their free time, they look for birds and trash in the Los Angeles River.
